The landscape of dispute resolution has undergone a massive paradigm shift over the past two decades. With traditional court systems burdened by extensive backlogs, corporate entities, commercial practitioners, and private individuals are increasingly turning to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms to resolve their conflicts efficiently. Among these, arbitration has emerged as the preferred choice for commercial dispute resolution, both domestically and internationally. The Certificate in Arbitration Advocacy (CAA), offered by the Indian Arbitration Institution (IAI), is a premier professional training program designed to equip candidates with the nuanced, practical skills required to excel in this specialized field.
Unlike traditional academic courses that focus heavily on theoretical jurisprudence, this program is meticulously engineered to bridge the gap between substantive law and practical application. Arbitration advocacy is a unique craft; it demands a different approach than conventional courtroom litigation. An effective arbitration counsel must understand how to draft precise arbitration clauses, navigate the complexities of constituting an arbitral tribunal, and present a compelling case in a less formal, yet highly structured, environment.
Throughout this course, participants will be immersed in the entire lifecycle of an arbitration proceeding. The curriculum is tailored to demystify the complexities of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 (and its subsequent amendments), alongside international best practices. Candidates will explore the critical phases of dispute resolution, from the initial invocation of arbitration to the final enforcement of an arbitral award.
The CAA is not exclusively for seasoned litigators; it is an essential toolkit for anyone involved in contract management, corporate negotiations, or commercial disputes. By prioritizing advocacy skills—such as drafting statements of claim, leading evidence without the rigid confines of the traditional Evidence Act, and conducting cross-examinations before a private tribunal—the IAI ensures that every participant emerges with a robust, practice-oriented foundation. Ultimately, this course empowers professionals to represent clients confidently, manage corporate disputes strategically, and contribute meaningfully to the rapidly growing ecosystem of institutional and ad-hoc arbitration.
The tentative module are as follows and the module can be subjected to changes based on the decision as provided by IAI Board of Skill Studies:
Module 1: Fundamentals of Arbitration and the Legal Framework

Case management conferences, establishing procedural timelines, and preliminary hearings.

The commercial world is moving at an unprecedented pace, and the legal and corporate frameworks supporting it must keep up. Arbitration has become the default mechanism for resolving high-stakes disputes in sectors ranging from construction and infrastructure to maritime, intellectual property, and international trade. Consequently, possessing a foundational understanding of arbitration is no longer a niche advantage—it is a fundamental requirement for modern professionals.
Doing this course provides a distinct competitive edge by focusing specifically on advocacy. Many professionals understand what arbitration is in theory, but few know how to effectively navigate a live proceeding. This course transitions you from a theoretical observer to an active, competent participant. You will learn how to strategically draft clauses that prevent jurisdictional disputes down the line, saving clients significant time and financial resources.
Furthermore, the IAI has structured this program to be highly accessible and practice-oriented. It distills years of procedural complexities into actionable, skill-based lessons. For law students, it offers a head start into the dispute resolution practice of top-tier law firms. For practicing lawyers, it provides the specialized knowledge required to pivot away from saturated traditional litigation into a highly lucrative practice area. For non-lawyers—such as engineers, chartered accountants, and business managers—it demystifies the legal process, enabling them to assist counsel efficiently, act as expert witnesses, or manage their organization’s legal portfolios with deep institutional competence.
Completing the Certificate in Arbitration Advocacy opens doors to a diverse array of professional opportunities across multiple sectors. As businesses actively seek to avoid the delays of the traditional court system, the demand for trained arbitration professionals has never been higher.
Law Firm Dispute Resolution Teams: Top-tier and boutique law firms are constantly expanding their ADR practices. A certification in arbitration advocacy acts as a strong credential for securing roles within these specialized teams. Associates with this training are often preferred for drafting complex arbitration pleadings, assisting in international commercial arbitrations, and handling interim relief applications.
In-House Corporate Counsel: Large corporations, particularly in infrastructure, real estate, and international trade, handle dozens of arbitrations simultaneously. In-house legal teams require professionals who can manage these disputes, liaise efficiently with external senior counsel, and oversee the arbitration lifecycle to protect the company's commercial interests.
Independent Arbitration Practice: For litigators looking to establish or expand their independent practice, arbitration offers a streamlined, fast-paced alternative to court litigation. Armed with the advocacy skills taught in this course, independent practitioners can confidently represent SMEs, contractors, and private clients before arbitral tribunals.
Tribunal Secretaries and Expert Witnesses: Senior arbitrators frequently appoint tribunal secretaries to assist with case management, legal research, and drafting procedural orders. This is a highly sought-after role for junior professionals to gain frontline exposure. Additionally, non-lawyer professionals taking this course will be better equipped to serve as subject-matter expert witnesses in complex technical arbitrations.
The Indian Arbitration Institution (IAI) has designed the delivery and administrative framework of this course with maximum flexibility and accessibility in mind, ensuring that geographical barriers, strict schedules, or financial constraints do not hinder professional development.
